Terry Jefferson thought the police car was trying to get around him. So he calmly reversed his vehicle and parked it on the side of the street. Minutes later he was lying in a pool of his own blood, two Seattle cops on top of him.KIRO 7 reports on the latest (can anyone even keep track of them all anymore?) questionable-use-of-force incident involving SPD.Dash-cam video of the incident shows officers pull up to Jefferson’s car on a neighborhood street near 23rd and Union. Jefferson, thinking the police car wanted to drive past him on the narrow street, immediately backs up his Cadillac DeVille into a spot on the side of the road. That’s when officers say “just yank him out” which they do, before proceeding to beat him bloody for nearly a minute straight behind the opened car door. Watch the video (which does not allow me to embed it in this post) here. Police had said they witnessed Jefferson make a “hand-to-hand transaction” at a nearby convenience store and that was the reason for the stop. But after beating up Jefferson they found no drugs on him or in his car. So instead, police booked Jefferson into jail for “obstruction” which is policespeak for “we didn’t find any drugs on you, so we’re going to send you to jail for wasting our time.”KIRO quotes former Bellevue police chief and independent police procedure analyst Don Van Blaricom who claims that everything SPD did was by the book. “Had they shot him or something of that nature, I think we’d all be saying that was excessive, but what they did was they took him into custody, using physical force, no question about that, and he was injured in the process. I think that’s unfortunate, but it’s not unreasonable under the circumstances.”So that’s the line, Mr. Van Blaricom? Police officers can beat someone all they want, regardless of whether they are compliant (or even given a chance to be compliant), just so long as they don’t shoot anyone?Jefferson, for his part, has already retained an attorney and is planning on suing SPD, which, if he wins (and he should), will once again be billed to Seattle taxpayers.
