If you were unfortunate enough to catch last night’s premiere episode of MTV’s reality-inspired show, “The Phone”, you are not alone. Shot in Seattle, “The Phone” leads ‘unsuspecting people’ on a scavenger hunt around the city to stop something catastrophic–in this case, a bomber– from happening, and in the process compete to win up to $50,000.One major claim “The Phone” has is Justin Timberlake as executive producer, which is honestly why I decided to stick it out in the first place. This completely scripted and staged debacle has permits, arrangements, and safety equipment written all over it. Reality my ass, normal people have to pay for taxis! My friends and I couldn’t help laughing as this wild goose chase unfolded. From the bomber who gets away on a bicycle, only after knocking several people down in Post Alley to external dialogues the contestants have with themselves that just look plain crazy. Maybe it was the car exploding at Alki Crab and Fish in West Seattle or the decoy bomb just outside of Pike Place Market that added a ” that’s not funny” factor to it all. It’s hard to say if living in Seattle gave me a certain bias against “The Phone”, but any show that enlists the Seattle Police Department to arrest a fake bomber on camera is just not right. For those of you who are not too interested in having Seattle aired out like Lindsay Lohan’s dirty laundry on MTV, don’t worry, shooting moves on to New York and Boston later in the season.
