I’ve always assumed that I knew everything I needed to know about TOMMY’S ON THE AVE. There’s a lot you can tell just by walking past it, or at least that’s what I thought. When I finally braved the entrance, the club held true to the stereotype I had pinned on it. It’s a divey dance club with greasy food, populated by frat bros and sorority sisters. However, $3 pitchers of Miller High Life can make any situation bearable. Every day from 4 to 7 p.m., the $3 happy-hour appetizer menu includes chicken tenders, fried mushrooms, fries, jalapeño poppers, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, and something called cheeseburger fingers. Mindless frozen food dumped into the deep fryer? Yes, and yet the kitchen managed to undercook the mozzarella sticks—and would it kill them to season the fries? The onion rings were tasty but even greasier than you would expect. Still, two pitchers of beer and three appetizers for 15 bucks plus tax and tip isn’t a bad deal if you’re in the mood for hanging out in what is essentially a frat-house basement. 4552 University Way N.E., 206-634-3144, UNIVERSITY DISTRICT
