Yoga Behind Bars Benefit

The bars don’t bend, but you can

Be serenaded by loungey groove sounds, or charmed by Indian-inspired invocational dances, as Samadhi Yoga hosts a multi-genre performance event to raise funds for Yoga Behind Bars, a local nonprofit that facilitates yoga instruction for King County inmates. YBB founder Shaina Traisman has been teaching yoga in prisons for five years, with the intention of rehabilitation and reducing recidivism. She and her all-volunteer troupe of yoginis can’t keep up with the demand—and also, as providers of a spiritual practice for prisoners, they can’t be compensated for their good works. Learn more about their program, sip a little wine, nibble some cheese, and perhaps drop a few dollars on their raffle. Among the performers will be DJ B-Girl (aka Mia Wallace) and yogini dancers Douglas Riding and KT Shores, accompanied by Gamelan Pacifica’s Steven Fandrich.
