Diem Chaus new work at Gallery4Culture explores the ephemeral nature of home and memory through the tactile media of embroidery, with portraits on translucent silk organza stretched across porcelain dishware. Delicate figure drawings are rendered in embroidery floss, with bodies delineated in fine contour lines, and faces sometimes left blank. A hairstyle and the cut of a blouse are depicted as fact, while the expression on what might be a relatives face is incomplete. Chaus palette is predominantly black on white, reinforcing the feeling that these pieces are drawings in fabric. Color is used sparingly: one strand of red thread connecting two hands, or the floral pattern on a blouse. One gallery wall will display an installation of knotted thread, a morse code translation of stories Chau encountered during her childhood in Vietnam¯in a nod to the female World War II spies who coded messages in their knitting. “Lost in Translation” offers a glimpse into the familiar, and perhaps still haunting, images of childhood in another culture.
