Roq La Rue Anniversary Show

Happy Birthday, Roq! Belltown’s popular gallery celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this month, thanks to owner/curator Kirsten Anderson. By creating a space for awesome-yet-accessible counterculture art, she’s helped tone down the stuffiness of Seattle’s art scene and introduced us to the work of high-profile cartoonists like Chris Reccardi (Powerpuff Girls, SpongeBob SquarePants) and Shag (Shag: A to Z). Through August 2, the “Anniversary Show” features wacky creations from dozens of artists, including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, and Femke Hiemstra. Keep in mind that the gallery closes its doors next month for remodeling. Abstract art is a cold, cruel, and often boring world, so enjoy these alien and monkey portraits while you still can. Roq La Rue, 2312 Second Ave., 374-8977, www.roqlarue.com. Free. 1–7 p.m. ERIKA HOBART
