Grand Archives at SP20

Sunday, July 13

Though they’ve only been signed to Sub Pop for a little over a year, Grand Archives have been making a lot of noise. Good noise. In 2006, Mat Brooke (formerly of Carissa’s Weird and Band of Horses) joined up with three other Seattleite-friends to create Archives, which later became Grand Archives and added a fifth member. Their first show saw Grand Archives in the middle of a small bill, with a five-song set. Their second performance was as the opening act for Modest Mouse. Needless to say, things moved along quickly, and the guys will be back at Marymoor Park for SP20 after literally making a full loop around the country, touring on their self-titled debut LP released this year. Though the Emerald City is generally accepted to be a gloomy place most of the time, you’d never know that from hearing Grand Archives’ music. And, as it says on their Sub Pop profile page, “dark times do not necessarily call for dark music.” They’re bright, upbeat and harmonic, both lyrically and musically. You can hear their Beach Boys influence. Luckily, things are looking a little brighter these days- in politics and the skies- so their music just feels right.
