Wah-ve ehck shun? Way-vee ex chun? Wave Action? Waaah-ever the fuck it is, it’s spelled “WAVI Xtion,” and it’s the first Kinect spin-off that’s being planned for the PC.As the developers of Microsoft Kinect’s camera technology, PrimeSense, announced yesterday, they’ve partnered with hardware manufacturer ASUS to essentially make a Kinect for a home computer. It will let users control PC-based TV, music, and Internet with their body movements–provided they’re not wheelchair-bound. Per PrimeSense:”Users can browse multimedia content, access the Internet and social networks, and enjoy full body interaction in a more user-friendly and natural living room experience.” And they’re calling it the WAVI Xtion.Apparently “WAVI” stands for wireless transmitter and receiver and “Xtion” for 3-D motion-capture camera (on some distant and horrifying world). It’s being pegged for release in the second quarter of 2011, and will probably make a bunch of rich people even richer. All we ask is that both words now be legal for use in Scrabble.
