Tribal linguist Timothy Montler says that the town of Sequim has been mistranslated for the past century. An expert in the study of dying languages, Montler has reportedly spent nearly 20 years speaking with elders in the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe, who informed him that the picturesque town in the shadow of the Olympic Mountain range does not translate to the tranquil-sounding “quiet waters.”Instead, says Montler, Sequim means “place for going to shoot.” A reference to the valley’s once great elk and waterfowl hunting and an infinitely more badass name for a place to live.What this means for Sequim and its identity isn’t clear. But as a Chamber of Commerce employee pointed out, the new nickname might mean some hefty printing costs. “‘Quiet waters’ is written on every piece of literature I’ve ever seen about us,” she told Daily Weekly.
