This handy chart, courtesy of Schmudget, shows how state spending and revenue as a percentage of personal income have both declined over the last 14 years. Rather than spending ourselved into oblivion, we’ve enacted a bunch of tax cuts and continue to rely on a sales tax on goods that’s not only regressive but increasingly outdated, as more spending continues to shift to services.
