There’s no shortage of things to do today if you’re looking to get out of the house–for example there’s Hempfest at Myrtle Edwards, a Mariners/Yankees game at Safeco Field, The Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs, and a “slickly entertaining” documentary about industrial design at the Northwest Film Forum. Add to that my friend Terry Kegel’s movie, I Speak Soccer, showing for free at Seattle Center House Room H at 3 PM. I’ve sung the movie’s praises on these pages before and it also won the Audience Award at this year’s STIFF. It’s a fascinating look at three sets of pickup games–one on a beach in Jacairape, Brazil, one on a municipal hard-top court Chiang Mai, Thailand, and one on a bleak roadside field in Ibadan, Nigeria. You get an appreciation for not just pickup soccer’s reach, of course, but for the hopes, dreams, frustrations, and self-perceptions of the people playing it in these places. This is its last scheduled showing in Seattle, so see it while you can!
