The P-I’s 911 blog (and what a shame it will be if Seattle loses the P-I–particularly its online contributions) reports that in addition to last night’s shooting in Pioneer Square, which injured three, there was also a gunfight at 55th and the Ave. in the U-District. I used to live about a block from there, and every Thursday night I looked forward to the 2 AM wake-up ruckus, when scores of drunk college students poured out of the bars. My favorite wake-ups were the fights, heavy on the threats and light on the fists, and invariably going on for at least a good twenty minutes, as various aggrieved parties broke free from their handlers and started the melee anew. Even though I had to work the next day, I’d get dressed and walk down for a live version of The Jerry Springer Show. I understand how most neighbors–particularly the more adult set–might not appreciate this buffoonery. But it’s amazing how the presence of a couple guns can turn a relatively harmless and quite entertaining nuisance into something genuinely threatening.
