The game isn’t until next Tuesday, but Mariners Ichiro Suzuki and Felix Hernandez have been named All-Stars. (Full All-Star roster here.) Ichiro was voted in as a starter (for the 9th time in 9 years–here’s hoping this year he’ll accept the invitation to do the home-run derby) while Felix, like all pitchers, was selected by the coaches. At only 23, Felix will be the youngest pitcher in the game, though not the youngest Mariners All-Star of all time–that honor goes to the great Ruppert Jones, who made the team at 22. Also worth noting–former Mariner and current Philadelphia Philly Raul Ibanez got voted on, and coaches named ex-M Adam Jones to the team as well. The selection of the slow-motion Ibanez shows how defense isn’t much valued in the selection process; if it were, argues USS Mariner scribe Dave Cameron, Seattle’s center field ground-gobbler Franklin Gutierrez would be on the team. In other Mariner news, the team just went 5-4 on a road trip against three of baseball’s best teams–the Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox, is just 3.5 games out of first place. Huzzah!
