The city’s budget cuts are final, announces Greg Nickels in a press release sent out this afternoon. Among his cuts were 59 city jobs and some library improvement packages. Libraries will also be closed for a week in August. One interesting tidbit: After writing about the cuts in mid-April, I was contacted by city public information officer Kathy Sugiyama, who wanted me to note that the Mayor didn’t need the Council’s approval for the cuts. Which is true, though Nick Licata aide Lisa Herbold contacted me to add that the Council can still have a say in the Mayor’s cuts by issuing provisos that hold up other money from being spent and by issuing supplemental budgets. (This runs somewhat contrary to the public stands some Councilmembers made in the lead-up to public hearings.) Either way, there don’t seem to be any big beefs about these cuts, which didn’t touch public safety or direct services.
