Nick MontanaYesterday provided a much needed infusion of young talent to Seattle sports. First, the Mariners began stocking up through the draft, using their first pick–second overall–on Dustin Ackley, a first-baseman/outfielder with good speed, whose bat has been compared to those of Wade Boggs and George Brett. (Scouts do sometimes indulge in hyperbole, but let’s hope they’re in the ballpark.)The M’s also picked up switch-hitting shortstop Nick Franklin (Yuniesky Betancourt=No longer a kid, no longer alright) and Rich Poythress, who will finally give them the hulking, right-handed first baseman/designated hitter to replace OG Steve Balboni, who’s been missed since his one season with the team in 1988. Speaking of Steve B’s, the M’s also drafted catcher Steve Baron, who sounds like he’s going to drive a hard bargain for his signing bonus. Finally, in case you missed it, lost child/headcase Brandon Morrow–profiled by SW’s Jesse Froehling last summer–has changed his mind and will return to starting.
