It’s impossible to know everything that was going on in Robert J. Kilborn’s life when he shot himself in the face with a shotgun during a traffic stop on Thursday. The 48-year-old Hayden man was stopped after a brief low-speed pursuit that began when a Kootenai County Sheriff’s Deputy tried to pull him over for an improper exhaust system on his Chevy Blazer. The Spokesman-Review

reports Thursday that Kilborn didn’t pull over immediately, but instead drove slowly to his friend’s house in Dalton Gardens and stopped the car. When a deputy approached his car, he saw that the man had a long shotgun in his hands, so the deputy backed away. Then the shot rang out.Kilborn was pronounced dead shortly after medics arrived, having shot himself in the face.He apparently had a warrant for failing to appear in court on a DUI charge and his driver’s license was suspended. In the grand scheme, however, both are fairly minor crimes that likely wouldn’t have involved more than a fine and perhaps a brief stint in jail. But whatever pushed Kilborn to pull the trigger yesterday, it’s likely more than the threat of a little jail time.
