It’s always a little embarrassing when you have to warn your out-of-town guests that, hey, if you cross right now, that cop over there might give you a jaywalking ticket. It’s like the adult equivalent of needing a hall pass. But that’s the reality of the city, and you’re better off warning them than letting them quite literally walk into a $50+ infraction. That’s what happened to White Sox GM Kenny Williams yesterday, crossing the streets outside of Safeco. (I must say, with the strip club on hold and jaywalking laws being enforced, I feel so much safer when I’m down there.) He tried to explain that, where he comes from, people don’t always use the crosswalks, but the cop wasn’t having any of it. Williams had just spent about $60 million of his team’s money on outfielder Alex Rios, so he had a pretty expensive afternoon. Enjoy your stay in Seattle, Mr. Williams. It’s summer, so there’s a lot to do here. Just make sure you have your permission slip. And are in by curfew.
