In fact, they won’t be using any kind of personal electronic device (PED), which includes phones and MP3 players. The same day the report on Washington drivers’ frequent texting came out, Metro issued a notice to its drivers that even having a PED on their person while driving will result in a suspension on the first occurence and a termination on the second. (Coincidentally, sports fans are accustomed to PED standing for performance enhancing drugs–typically steroids–something it’s funny to think would be a problem among Metro drivers.)Seattle Transit Blog has the full notice, but suffice it to say, Metro means business. Warns the release:Major infractions for this offense before Sept. 19 will result in a minimum six-day suspension. On and after Sept. 19, the first major infraction will result in termination. This is a zero tolerance policy! It totally makes sense from a safety standpoint, but it’s a tough rub for Metro drivers that they can’t use headphones. That’s how much of the rest of the workforce escapes the problems of the workday, and when you deal with dangling used condoms, chronic masturbators, and lots of verbal abuse, I imagine a little escape would be nice.
