If you start a boy band, Kyle, Laura Onstot promises to buy your albumA little over a month ago, former-Cougar Kyle Weaver–that willowy, doe-eyed defensive specialist who’s broken hearts from Pullman to SW’s newsroom–got his first stint as an NBA starter. (And for the former Supes, no less.) The conventional wisdom was that Weaver was a stopgap starter, a limited player who could defend but not score.Well, with Kevin Durant and Jeff Green injured, Weaver’s been filling up the box score. Granted, it’s only a four game stretch, but Weaver has averaged 13.3 points on 48.8% shooting in March. What’s more, the Thunder have been playing better, which may be attributable to the improved defense in Durant’s absence. Of course, Weaver doesn’t have the talent of Durant and Green and likely won’t be keeping a long-term starting spot, but it looks like he’s in the league to stay. Which is more than we’ve been able to say of any Coug since Mark Hendrickson. In fact, we predict Weaver’ll have the most successful Coug career since–dare we say it?–Craig Ehlo!
