Greg Nickels is both unpopular and the presumed favorite in the upcoming mayoral race. While he faces challenges from Michael McGinn, James Donaldson, and Norman Sigler, his most formidable potential opponent, Peter Steinbrueck, would rather go to Harvard. Similarly, Nick Licata and Tim Burgess have declined. But now Jan Drago tells Crosscut’s David Brewster that she hasn’t ruled out a mayoral run. (She also hasn’t ruled out a job with the Gates Foundation, Vulcan, or as the Port of Seattle Commissioner.) “He will not avoid a serious challenge,” she predicts. The thing is, the biggest complaints about Nickels seem to be an undue focus on mega-projects and a too-cozy relationship with developers and big business. And his partner in most of these ventures is Drago, who was Robin to his Batman (or vice versa) on the deep bore tunnel and a a notable Nickels ally on the Mercer Corridor Project as well.So it’s kinda hard to see what her angle would be, though it’s even harder to envision the “fusion candidacy” David Brewster speculates about, in which Peter Steinbrueck would deliver Drago support from the left. Though any of the above would be welcome in a mayoral race that, at least so far, is looking like a bit of a snoozer.
