Earlier this week Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Casino canceled an upcoming concert featuring outspoken and aging rocker Ted Nugent, citing the Motor City Madman’s “racist views.” And now the Emerald Queen Casino, operated by the Puyallup Indian Tribe, has followed suit.

As KING 5 and others have noted, Nugent’s upcoming shows at the EQC, scheduled for Aug. 2 and 3, have been called off due to the same concerns expressed by in Coeur d’Alene. “I don’t want to take away his right to say what he wants to say, but we don’t need it here,” Puyallup Tribal Council Vice President Lawrence W. LaPointe recently said of Nugent, presumably in regard to the right wing rocker’s tendency to do things like call President Obama a “subhuman mongrel” (or, as if proving a point, refer to his critics in Coeur d’Alene as “unclean vermin”).

For anyone within earshot of Nugent, the only surprising element of this story is it’s just happening now. Nugent has a long history of saying terrible shit.

Naturally, as he’s done his how gawdawful career, the Nuge is fighting back against his detractors – employing familiar counterpoints, like how many black guys he knows, and that he once had a Mexican bass player.

In an interview with Radio.com, Nugent offered:

“To call me a racist is a clear act of desperation. Because everybody knows I’m not a racist! My [former] bass player Johnny Gunnel happens to be a black guy. My [former] bass player Marco Mendoza was born in Mexico! Are you kiddin’ me? I pay tribute to Martin Luther King in my songs, I’ve always said my music is a direct result of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, and all the black musical heroes of my life. … These sick, sick, stoned, hygiene-challenged Michael Moore fans, they call in and complain that I’m a racist, they claim I’m a pedophile, that I dodged the draft. They call all the promoters, the call all the venues, they call all my sponsors, every day. Meanwhile, what am I doing? I’m going to rock my ass off tonight. And tomorrow night. And the next night.”

However, what’s clear as of yesterday is Nugent will not be rocking his ass off Aug. 2-3 in Tacoma.
