During the last legislative session, the state legislature approved the creation of a Center for Human Rights center at the UW–but it didn’t provide any funding. Center supporters were pleased nonetheless, as the approval gives them a helpful imprimatur for fundraising. Now, reports the P-I’s Joel Connelly, Tacoma Congressman Norm Dicks is looking to score the center half-a-million through a federal earmark. Says Connelly, “This is a good earmark.” Among the center’s likely activities–Angelina Godoy, its likely head, told SW–are work with displaced Afro-Colombians abroad and domestic work on the right to health. Perhaps if Congress helps the center with money, the center can help Congress with this whole health care thing.
