Don Munks’ county is too broke to get un-broke.No matter how broke the federal government is, there’s always enough money to do two things: collect taxes and bomb Muslim countries. The tax-collecting part can usually also be said about local county and state governments as well. But apparently even that most basic and self-serving function of the people’s will is no longer possible in Skagit County, where Tax Assessor Don Munks says he’s too understaffed to collect everyone’s property dues.KING-5 reports that Munks’ staff has been cut by five people, and he says that without them, the county could lose between $71,000 and $160,000 in tax revenue.”We just ran out of time,” Munks said. “It was a lack of employees. We just ran out of time.”Worst of all, Munks claims that spending $10,000 to $20,000 to hire a temporary worker would have saved all that money. It’s a good pitch to make, Mr. Munks. But saying that one more person could tackle the job when before it took five sort of proves a whole different point altogether, no?Follow The Daily Weekly on Facebook and Twitter.
