Daphne Ryan says her roommate was riding his mountain bike on Galbraith Mountain near Bellingham this week when he suddenly found himself tangled in fishing line and hooks. Turns out that he’s not the only one to get snagged on the trails at Galbraith.Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks tells Seattle Weekly that deputies have heard of at least two other incidents involving riders running into fishing line strewn across trails at the park.He says that his office has little to go by, however, in terms of finding out who did it and even then what to charge them with.”It’s hard to say what they could be charged with,” he says. “Perhaps reckless endangerment or malicious mischief. It would depend on the circumstances.”Fishing-line traps on trails are actually not altogether uncommon. The thin, strong lines are nearly impossible to see, especially while riding fast. And hitting one can do some real damage.Last year, Edmonton marathon legend Sandy Jacobson was clotheslined by fishing line while riding her bike on a trail. Here’s the aftermath.Riders at Galbraith are urged to be careful (as much as one can) and to call park supervisors or sheriff’s deputies if they get snagged on or see lines.Follow The Daily Weekly on Facebook and Twitter.
