Cliff Mass is thrilled to be working in radio again. The local weatherman and former Seattle Weekly

cover-story subject was fired from KUOW back in June for occasionally talking about education, instead of only the weather. Mass’ new gig with KPLU offers him more on-air time, better technology and a well-informed host. What it doesn’t offer him is the chance to do what got him the boot at KUOW.Mass tells Seattle Weekly today that he’ll be sticking to “just weather” during his five-minute segment, which airs every Friday at 9 a.m. He also says that’s “fine with me.””Education material will be separate, with other reporters,” he tells us. “And I can save controversial topics for media outlets such as yours, which are willing to cover controversial topics.”Indeed we are.It should be noted that Mass’ forays into education topics come not without qualification. Mass himself is a longtime educator, a professor of atmospheric studies at UW and a frequent critic of Washington State’s commitment to public education. When firing Mass, KUOW host Steve Scher said he “[did] not want the weather segment to become an opinion and views segment.”It would appear that KPLU doesn’t want that either. The station does, however, want Cliff Mass, which is the same that can be said for thousands of Mass fans who posted on the “Put Cliff Mass Back on KUOW” Facebook page and the hundreds more who apparently called and e-mailed KPLU to demand that the network snatch him up.Joey Cohn, director of content at KPLU, tells The Seattle Times:”I’ve been here almost 24 years, and I’ve never seen a personality so in demand.” “Weather with Cliff Mass” will air on Fridays at 9 a.m. on KPLU (88.5 FM) beginning Sept. 2.Follow The Daily Weekly on Facebook and Twitter.
