Breaking news: A new Beijing hotel designed by Rem Koolhaas, the rigorous Dutch architect who conceived our downtown library, is going up in flames. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel was not yet completed or occupied, so there appear to be no injuries. The hideous structure burst into flames Monday night, as The Guardian here reports. As of this writing, our Central Library has not yet been evacuated as a precautionary measure. Experts do not believe the building is ugly enough to ignite on its own.
