Today is alt-folk rocker Elvis Perkins’ 32nd birthday. He’s celebrating it by getting the word out that his upcoming tour kicks off here in Seattle. He’ll be playing alongside his band at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard on March 9th and making a lot of lonely girls happy. His bar room style of guitar strumming and harmonica playing seem tailor-made to heal broken hearts. Perkins knows a lot about heartbreak himself: His mother was killed on September 11 and his famous actor father, Anthony Perkins, died of AIDS in ’92. Usually, you can hear a lot of that melancholia in his music. Most of the songs that Elvis Perkins in Dearland perform have a dark, brooding, feel to them as if their secretly songs composed for a funeral. But his latest song, “Shampoo,” seems upbeat compared to his older material. If you haven’t heard it yet, you can listen to it here.
