Awarding Wine World & Spirits this title may be a stretch, only because you really don’t need to buy anything to benefit from a trip to the 45th Street booze emporium. Several nights a week, representatives from breweries, wineries, and distilleries can be found at the bar in the back of the showroom happily slinging free samples of their wares. When you do want to buy, it’s hard to go three minutes without being offered assistance and pumped for information about what you’ll be pairing your wine with that night. (On one visit, I thought I’d stump them when I said stuffed peppers were for dinner. I was wrong and got hooked up with a nice $10 cab.) Twenty-two-ounce beer bottles are in plentiful supply; even ginger beer gets a few shelves of action. Even if you go for the free booze, you’ll be hard-pressed to leave without something tucked under your arm.
