All you rabid Francophiles out there likely need no reminder that next Tuesday, July 14 is Bastille Day, the anniversary of the day on which the French peasants stormed the Bastille (a fortress and prison), thereby showing the monarchy what for and securing their independence from tyranny (…sort of). Now, just as we do, the French celebrate the birth of their democracy by watching fireworks, eating too much and getting really, really plowed. Except, you know, they’re not so uptight, which means they can drink in the streets without getting arrested. Oh, France. Why did I ever leave you?ANYhow, if you’d like to join in the festivities and celebrate an Independence Day that is not your own, the Bal des Pompiers takes place tomorrow at the Fisher Pavilion in the Seattle Center from 6 p.m. to midnight. There, you can enjoy a delicious menu of Moroccan foods (Morocco was a French colony) for $50 if you buy tickets today, or $65 if you just decide to show up tomorrow. Booze and sodas, it should be noted, are sold separately. Bummer. The good news is that on Sunday, July 12, starting around 11 p.m., there is a free festival at the Seattle Center featuring music, $5 wine-tasting sessions and all kinds of good stuff at the Seattle Center; here’s the complete schedule so you can plan your day. On Monday, July 13, Cafe Campagne is having a street fair in Post Alley from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m., complete with $5 wine, $5-10 discount menu items, music and can-can dancers. On Tuesday, July 14, Le Pichet will host a free Bastille Day party from 6 p.m. on.Also on Tuesday, July 14, Gainsbourg will offer happy hour prices all night long and play French flicks and music in lieu of the regular Twin Peaks Tuesday. And in Georgetown, the Corson Building is throwing a Bastille Day Feteon Tuesday with live music from The Pharmacy, Schoolyard Heroes, Caspar Babypants (you know, for your sweet little bebes), starting at 3 p.m. It’s $20 for adults, but kids 12 and under are free. If I’m missing anything, by all means, drop me a line in the comments.
