A parking cop was making her rounds in Beacon Hill on Tuesday morning when she came upon a car that had violated the two-hour limit. Behind the wheel was a man who appeared to be sleeping. The cop knocked twice on his window in an effort to wake him up, but he didn’t budge. So she put a $42 ticket on his windshield and went on her way. Only later did she find out why he wasn’t moving.Derek Eldridge, 36, the “driver” behind the wheel, was pronounced dead by medics who arrived roughly an hour after he got his ticket. His girlfriend had tracked him down using a GPS system. When she finally found him in his car he was unconscious and unresponsive.Seattle police say the officer did nothing wrong. Apparently, cops find a lot of people sleeping in their cars.Eldridge’s cause of death hasn’t yet been determined. But police say there were no signs of violence. And while what ended his life might be a mystery, how he lived it isn’t: the ticket he received posthumously was Eldridge’s first.
