This evening I’ll be working the Andy Caldwell show at See Sound

This evening I’ll be working the Andy Caldwell show at See Sound Lounge on behalf of the America’s Best DJ competition/tour, a 20-city, sub-genre-spanning electronic music showcase sponsored by Pioneer Pro DJ and DJ Times magazine. My sorta thankless task is to round up addled clubbers–meaning: you people–at the event and get them to vote for–you guessed it–America’s Best DJ. Of course, those in attendance are encouraged to check off Caldwell’s name in solidarity with their city’s stop. But no matter your preference, all voters will be eligible to win a trip to Vegas and some other goodies. (Full press release available after the jump.)All right: enough fine print, shameless self promotion and potentially problematic disclosures. Let’s talk music. As I write, I’m jamming Caldwell’s 13-song edition of Swank Recordings’ Late Night…series. It’s a very grown and sexy effort, as evidenced by the cut currently echoing off my kitchen tile, “S.U.M.O.” An electro bounce fills the space between the tribal-ish drums, as snyths hum in the distance–you know, in case you needed reminding that this is electronic music. I fear the San Fran jock/producer/remixologist’s easily digestible, deep house-centric style may confuse those who’ve been spending too much time giving themselves whiplash in the land of drum-and-bass, dubstep and other rougher edged sounds. In other words, his stuff is accessible–in the best possible sense. Promise.Press Release:NEW YORK – Pioneer Pro DJ and DJ Times magazine are pleased to announce the launch of the fourth annual America’s Best DJ (ABDJ) competition and summer tour. America’s Best DJ gives U.S.-based DJs a chance to shine just as brightly as their European contemporaries. The U.S. is the birthplace of dance music, the origin of club culture, and the biggest entertainment market in the world. Its DJs deserve a contest of their own. As selected by the staff of DJ Times, this year’s TOP 100 U.S. DJs – and contenders for the title of America’s Best DJ – represent every possible style from Bhangra to Booty-tech. Online Voting Begins May 1, so dance music fans are encouraged to visit www.americasbestdj.net and vote for their favorite DJs! Supporting the online vote, a 20-city tour–dubbed America’s Best DJ Summer Tour Presented by Pioneer Pro DJ–kicks off Saturday, May 2, at Pacha NYC with New York’s own DJ Boris.
