Many of the folks in this office know that my mom tortured me with her love of Yanni throughout my adolescence, which is probably why I returned from SXSW today to find Yanni’s new album sitting on my desk. And to my horror, the cover showed a shorn Yanni! I mean, the one thing I always liked about the guy were his hilarious album covers, which consisted of him, standing in front of some picturesque scene, long Fabio hair blowing in the breeze, with the same tranquil smile underneath that bushy moustache like he had achieved somen kind of higher level of being that we mere mortals couldn’t begin to comprehend. But that’s not all: Yanni, who has long resisted lyrical accompaniment to his, ahem, creations, made a record called Voices, and the lyrics are just as cheesy as the music is. I made it through about two minutes, but from that two minutes, I can share this much with you: The phrase “cry like an angel” comes into play. Song titles include, “Never Leave The Sun,” “Kill Me With Your Love,” and “Moments Without Time.” It’s as bad as it sounds, but of course, suburban moms everywhere are gonna eat this up, Yanni’s shorn head notwithstanding. I know my mom will.
