Last year, I saw the Hive Dwellers open up for Chain and the Gang (Ian Svenonius’ current band) and liked it as much as, if not more than, anything Calvin Johnson’s done so far. It’s a rotating collective of musicians who’ve been involved with various K Records projects, but the Hive Dwellers haven’t put anything out yet themselves. Until I received a joyous e-mail, belatedly, The joys of movingas great as I remembered them being live. In this particular instance, Calvin Johnson combines Lou Reed’s aesthetic with Ian Curtis’ voice. Heavy drums (Teeth Mountain) basically the most awesome drum circle you’ve ever seen.
