Jay Electronica throws up the Roc diamond at The Box in Manhattan, November 12. On Friday night, Jay-Z officially announced New Orleans emcee Jay Electronica to be the latest addition to the Roc Nation roster–an end a lengthy series of label courtships. Elec apparently came to the realization that Hov was serious on the offer when an e-mail came with a verse attached, and that verse became part of “Shiny Suit Theory,” the throwback-gameshow-feeling lyrical barrage that completely justifies why I called him “lyrically and sonically brilliant” when he played this year’s Bumbershoot Festival. It also makes explicit reference to P. Diddy, who took Jay Elec under his wing early on:”Me and Puff, we was chilling in Miami / He said fuck the underground / You need to win a Grammy / For your mama and your family, they need to see you shined up / You built a mighty high ladder, let me see you climb up.”Diddy’s response, via Twitter: “It hurts in a whole other way when someone you felt was your Friend betrays you.” Drama aside, I have a feeling this roster expansion will have a lot more impact on the notoriously elusive Elec’s ability and willingness to put out a record than it will affect fellow Roc Nation signee J. Cole’s ability to get attention. Here’s to hoping I’m right.
