Creeeeeeepy…It’s not the fact that Chapel (1600 Melrose Ave) was formerly a mortuary that most intrigues me. It’s that Prince once threw a party there, according to a girlfriend of mine who has a borderline unhealthy obsession with the artist. Apparently, he never actually went inside the bar, instead opting to stay in his limo. But if Chapel is good enough for Prince to loiter outside of, then it’s certainly good enough for me to drink inside of. It transforms into a mecca for house music on surprisingly, Sunday nights. DJ Nathan Heal of local techno band CyberSutra and DJ Skiddle spin records in the lounge looking down at the bar, which is crowded with an eclectic mix of customers desperately trying to avoid the fact that the weekend is over. And while you won’t catch Prince on a typical Sunday night, there are usually several on-air personalities from c89.5 FM on hand to scope out the music.Sounds sort of glamorous, but there’s no denying that Chapel looks like something straight out of The Shining. The gothic style windows, uncomfortable seating, dark wooden floors… there’s something very cold about it all. But there’s nothing scary about the bar’s all-day happy hour ($1 beers, $5 martinis) or soundtrack of throbbing beats. Come Monday morning however, you’re bound to feel like death. But that’s probably a fitting state to be in after spending the night in a funeral home.
