Yesterday, we had to announce the sad news that Paladar–the Cuban food truck that, until yesterday, was permanently anchored at 8953 Aurora Avenue North–was closing up shop for good. And this was sad. With a few very rare exceptions, I hate to see any restaurant go under (though I’ll do a public and pants-less happy dance the day that Olive Garden finally throws in the towel), but I really hate to see Cuban joints close. There’s just not enough of them around anywhere (save Florida) in relation to how good the food can be, and every closure makes the culinary landscape just that much darker.But like folks say, the food gods never close a door without opening a window. And while losing Paladar is a blow, I am happy to report that we also gained another food truck just in the past few days.Curry Now! rolled out into the great, wide world just last week, on June 23, at a holiday-appropriate location behind Tulalip Casino on the grounds of Boom City–the big-ass annual fireworks market on the Tulalip reservation. Unsurprisingly, Curry Now! is all about the curry–chicken, beef and shrimp, with some aloo matar, roti, cucumber salad and samosa available as well. According to the website, most of the recipes are generational, having been passed down through various family members, but originated in Fiji. Which means that while we might’ve lost some excellent Cuban grub with the closing of Paladar, we’ve traded it in for some Fijian curry and roti–which has to be even more rare than a great medianoche or plate of ropa vieja.Curry Now! will be feeding the crowds at Boom City through the 4th of July. After that, it’ll be moving on, making the (as yet unspecified) neighborhood rounds and bringing curry to the neighborhoods of King and Snohomish counties.
