This week, the editors on high forwarded me an email that some Seattleite had sent to Ask a Mexican’s Gustavo Arellano — who’s based in Southern California — asking him where he could find good Mexican food in Seattle. Gustavo says it’s not the first time he’s been asked. (It’s not a completely idiotic query: In addition to his myth-busting duties, Gustavo’s the food guy at the OC Weekly.)I hear “There’s no good Mexican food in Seattle” over and over again, and always from white people. Disproving them is one of the reasons that I spent a couple weeks driving all over creation, and I’ve got to say: You whiners need to shut up and get in your cars. I’ve only lived in Seattle six months, and I’ve definitely found good Mexican food here — not surprisingly, in the neighborhoods where Mexican American folks live: White Center, for one. Beacon Hill and Rainier Valley. My new favorite destination, Everett. Actually, you don’t even have to drive very far out of the center of town to eat kickass food at places like El Quetzal, El Sabor de Oaxaca, and of course, La Carta de Oaxaca.
