Since I have a fondness for restaurants that hit their heyday decades ago, I’m accustomed to eating in dining rooms where the next-youngest guest once owned a Victrola. But at Uneeda Burger, the subject of this week’s restaurant review, I probably could have talked the friendly counter staffer into giving me a senior discount.Over the course of my three meals at Uneeda, I encountered dozens and dozens of children. That’s something I saw fit to include in my review, since the family-friendly vibe is such a core component of the Uneeda experience.A few readers who’ve responded to the review found my mention of children gratuitous: “Hanna Raskin, whoever she is, apparently is more concerned with the children in the restaurant than the food in the restaurant,” one online comment writer wrote.Food writers have worn out their typing muscles chronicling the ongoing saga of children and restaurants, and it’s not necessary to rehash all the issues here. But I think it’s important for diners to know if a restaurant’s especially hospitable to children. Like Caesar salads made with white anchovies and barbecue sauced with vinegar, a child-filled dining room is neither innately good nor bad, but it’s a nexus of very strong opinions. There are diners who seek out restaurants with a multi-generational clientele, and diners who can’t stand eating among children. The latter probably don’t want to mess with Uneeda. But they’ll be missing out on a fine burger, and an awfully good chicken sandwich. You’ll find the full review here.Follow Voracious on Twitter and Facebook.
