Pretty much every day of the year is National Something Day, foodwise. January 9 is National Apricot Day. May 5 is Oyster Day. March is National Celery Appreciation Month. July 21 is National Junk Food Day. One could easily live a varied, interesting, exciting (and, likely, short) life by doing nothing but eating whatever food it is that’s being celebrated on any given day.But June 4 is special. Because June 4 is National Donut Day. And Mighty-O will be celebrating by giving away free donuts all day.Well, free mini donuts, anyhow–glazed Baby-O’s, Cini Minis, or Mini Blueberry Monsters. From 6 a.m. ’til 5 p.m., every single person through the door will get their own free donut just for being alive, ambulatory and in the right place at the right time on National Donut Day.Funny thing: while most of America’s national food holidays have only the most tenuous connection to any real-life event or celebration (I mean, what, precisely, are we celebrating on National Canned Fruit Day?), Donut Day actually has a historical antecedent. According to the bastion of factual excellence, Wikipedia, Donut Day began in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. The goal was to help people out during the depression and to honor the service of the Salvation Army’s donut girls of WWI who served donuts to soldiers.Oh, and just a little something to make the East Coast transplants pine for home? Dunkin’ Donuts shops are also giving away free donuts all day tomorrow. Seriously, in this place where there are no Dunkin’ Donuts, how much would you pay for a plain glazed right now?
