One of America’s most thoughtful writers on food and sustainability issues, Tom Philpott, is coming to Seattle on Saturday to screen a new documentary titled Food Fight. (No surprise what it’s about.) The screening and panel discussion will be held at Town Hall at 7 p.m. It’s part of the Seattle Green Festival. You don’t need to be a conference-goer to attend, but you do have to make a reservation. See the Town Hall website for details.Philpott, who writes Grist’s Victual Reality column, is both an organic farmer and a journalist, and I love reading what he has to say about national legislation, food policy, nutrition, organics and income, and CSAs — because his opinions are grounded in solid reporting and practical economics. I believe him when he argues: This is why the food I produce costs what it does. This is how federal policy can be changed to better support small farms like mine. This is where your idealism — or your skepticism — is off-base.If you feel like your visionary quotient is a little low and need to bulk up on dreams of revolutionary deliciousness, Alice Waters, whose grande dame-dom grows ever grander by the year, will also be a participant on the panel. I’d actually be interested to see the two of them talk about money and class issues.
