M.P.No mystery meat in De Luxe’s Wednesday blue plate special. If you’ve ever found yourself driving around the north end of Broadway late on a Sunday night looking for eats, chances are you ended up at the De Luxe Bar and Grill. This corner bar is a mash-up of cocktail lounge, burger joint, and–by virtue of its nightly blue plate special–diner. Okay, the blue plate specials aren’t exactly what you remember from Sunday brunch with grandparents in a Wenatchee Perkins. The plates aren’t even the right color. Depending on the day, you can get gourmet mac ‘n cheese or fish ‘n chips. The closest it gets to the blue plate special served by a woman who can carry four plates on an arm and handle shameless flirting by long-haul truckers without missing a drink order is Sunday when chef Della picks the entree–and that’s only because of the name Della. But lest this seem like a complaint, assurances it isn’t. Let me back up for a minute. Burgers are De Luxe’s specialty. The menu features nine options (including personal favorite the Fuego, which oozes with chipotle mayo), none of which skimp on the toppings (the Fuego has what looks to be half an avocado stuffed into it), and each comes with a healthy dose of thick fries, onion rings, or fresh salad. It is important to remember this because on Wednesdays, the day of this particular bottom feed, the blue plate special is Burgerama. For the price of a drink, which you were probably going to get anyway, and a 5 dollar bill, you can get any one of the nine with the accoutrements. The other days are fine, if generally generic, entrees. But munching on platters of burgers and fries and washing them down with the beers required for the lower price, who cares if they didn’t arrive on a blue plate. And do it right, ditch that salad nonsense and get the rings.
