Just spotted on my last drive south: Rainier Ave. south of Hillman City has a couple of new places. If the online menu is any suggestion, Kawali Grill, at 5300 Rainier is serving a Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride of dishes, from spinach feta omelets to wild mushroom chicken marsala, but the real appeal seems to be the Filipino food: longsilog (sweet sausage and fried eggs), pansit, and lechon kawali (roast pork). A few blocks south, Alcatraz Mexican Restaurant is opening, and it looks like they’re putting some effort into making it pretty.
