It’s that time of week when we answer the questions you’re too drunk or shy to ask…This question comes from Evan: Is there any etiquette to asking for a sample of beer or wine in a restaurant? It seems that some places offer you a sample, others not so much. Many seem fine with a small beer sample, but I’ve had my share of annoyed looks if I have to ask. I just want to know I like something before I get stuck with a whole glass of it. Also, do I even dare ask for a tiny taste of liquor if I want to try something new, or is that totally out of line? You’re right. There’s no consistency to service when you start asking questions about wines by the glass or beer. Sadly, often times it’s a simple matter of logistics. If a server or restaurant is really busy, just placing the order for your drinks and getting them from the bar to your table can be enough of a task, and that may cause a server to not make that extra effort (not excusing, just explaining). If you’re at the bar, a bartender should always offer a sample because they’ve got the good right in front of them. Don’t be afraid to ask to try something first. Be polite, use your pleases and thank yous and don’t abuse the privilege. Expect a half ounce pour, or barely more than a sip. Servers and bartenders should want you to try something new and be eager about sharing the wines and beers on the menu. If they aren’t, vote with your feet. Liquor is a different story; though I can’t really defend why that would be the case. A bottle of any given spirit is considerably more expensive than the same quantity of wine or beer, and it’s much more difficult to parse out a sample and get a good idea of something. If you sit at the bar, order a round or two of drinks and wonder out loud what the heck Ouzo’s all about, any bartender worth his keep will float you a small sip. It’s one of the benefits of sitting at the bar.Got a question for the bartender? Email me at msavarino@seattleweekly.com.
