Seattle Soundbite, Thursday, March 19: In celebration of the restaurant industry's long tradition of being the bread and butter for struggling artists of all types--particularly musicians--Seattle Soundbite brings the musicians and the fancy food together in the second incarnation of what will hopefully become a longstanding Seattle tradition. Basically, some of SeattleaE™s best restaurants will be hanging out at the SODO, serving high-class street-vendor style foods while musicians with food service backgrounds entertain the gorging crowd. Sub Pop band The Helio Sequence, a Portland duo that consists of Benjamin Weikel (no doubt one of the happiest-looking drummers in the history if indie rock) and axe-wielding frontman Brandon Summers headline the affair. Though the band's indie pop constructions are perfectly pleasant in recorded form (their latest release is called Keep Your Eyes Ahead), on stage the two men manage to conjure more energy than most bands three times their size. Another notable act is the instrumental concept band Bird Show Of North America, who play dynamic songs named after birds while the band's full-time artist, Curtis Poortinga, paints pictures the audience can admire-- and purchase for around $20-$40-- after the show. With Sue Quigley, Doctor Doctor, and Puget Sound System with Truce. Showbox SODO, 1700 1st Ave. S., 652-0444. 6 p.m., $15. Note by SARA BRICKNER MP3: Can't Say No

John Vanderslice, Thursday, September 17: Among that certain cadre of orchestral-pop troubadours -- Leonard Cohen descendants like Rufus Wainwright, Tom Waits, DeVotchKa's Nick Urata, sometimes Billy Bragg -- John Vanderslice stands out for sounding the most like all the others combined. In these Depression 2.0 times, that may seem like a bargain -- it's like hearing a half-dozen singer-songwriters for the price of one! -- but let's not be quite so cynical. Vanderslice isn't a pop composite as much as he is a musical Zelig, having rubbed shoulders in recording studios and on stages with the likes of Death Cab, Spoon, Okkervil River, The Mountain Goats and Sufjan Stevens. The fact that he remains relatively under the radar means that the lush arrangements and striking lyrics off his latest album, Romanian Names, can be enjoyed in a more intimate setting alongside fans who, like you, are in it for the music. With Pink Mountaintops and Mimicking Birds. Crocodile, 2200 Second Ave. 441-5611. 8 p.m. $14 adv. Note by ROSE MARTELLI

Susan Tedeschi, Wednesday, August 19: While most great musical partnerships are forged before the respective parties go down their own solo paths, Susan Tedeschi and her husband Derek Trucks are working in the opposite direction. They're in bed together, they're raising a family together, they've toured together, and they've made appearances on each others' records. But they've never made a proper album together. It's an inevitability that has the potential to be greater than anything the couple has every accomplished on their own. Tedeschi brings a beautiful, gravelly voice, Southern charm and pop sensibilities pinned on her vest; Trucks sings through his slide guitar in a voice of his own, but pushes increasingly onto the fringes of popular music on a crash course toward self-indulgent experimentalism. Together on a full-length, they could play to each others' strengths, temper their vices, and make the record their fans are begging for. Woodland Park Zoo, 601 N. 59th St. 684-4800. 7 p.m. $22. All ages. Note by CHRIS KORNELIS

[Wednesday, August 20] A sort of supergroup culled from SeattleaE™s thriving punk/power-pop scene (members have previously been spotted in the Greatest Hits, the Pop Machine, and the Cute Lepers), the Shy Ones come at their simple, spiky, catchy tunes the same way as the Ramones once didaE“ by revving up the sounds of Tommy James and the Shondells and early Kinks and the like, merging the Mod-pop aE™60s with the proto-punk aE™70s. With the Electric Kisses, the Pranks. King Cobra, 916 E. Pike St. 9 p.m. Listen to All I Ever.
