Michael Kiwanuka’s Musical Zoloft

Songwriting as therapy.

Times New Viking, Thursday, October 22:Ah, Times New Viking; they haven't changed a bit. Born Again Revisited may be the Ohio trio's fourth album, and second for the indie kingpins at Matador, but it's still a trash-or-treasure pile of absolute no-fi shrillness. Punch-drunk keyboard lines knock against constant squalls of distorted guitar and hoarse boy-girl shouts, while somewhere beneath it all, a drummer pounds out bruised rhythms far past the point of collapse. It's such a visceral thing, guaranteed to jar awake anyone sleepwalking through indie rock's more immaculate practitioners. Even though a slew of bands have adopted the shitgaze sound or some likeminded permutation in the four short years since Times New Viking crashed onto the scene, they've still got the ability to shock us. And yet, as always, there are melodies peeking out everywhere, albeit bleary-eyed and nursing a hangover. Once you realign your senses to fit the band's brash, reeling output, there's a certain beauty to so much white noise and buried ambition. With Herr Jazz. Vera Project, 300 Warren Ave N. 956-8372. 7:30 p.m. $10. All ages. Note by DOUG WALLEN

Wavves, Thursday, April 9: Nathan Williams isnaE™t trying to convince anyone that Wavves is revolutionary. He isnaE™t trying to spearhead a new musical movement or define a new aesthetic. Williams maps out his intentions best with the resigned, drawn out chorus and murky surf punk of aEœSo Bored.aE He needed something to do, and he had a guitar. ItaE™s telling that the lyrical thrust of much of WavvesaE™ material focuses so exclusively on the affliction which serves as its provenance, as if WilliamsaE™ ennui and ingenuity comprise an exclusive symbiotic relationship, and Williams doesnaE™t mind wallowing in it a little bit. Williams isnaE™t the first kid to thrash together a few chords in order to keep ennui at bay, nor is he the first to drench the results in noise and clatter. Where Wavves shines is in its ability to assimilate the various parts of its musical personalityaE”without sounding like aEœX reinterpreted as Y.aE This is not pop music re-imagined as lo-fi noise; even though Wavves is noisy, it comes complete with a finely calibrated pop sheen. With Vampire Hands, the Cold Cold Ground, Broken Knives. Funhouse, 206 Fifth Ave. N., 374-8400. 9:30 p.m., $7. Note by NICHOLAS HALL
