Zak Sally

Saturday, August 2

The good thing about having been in a band in the past is that you already know how to tour. Zak Sally- formerly of Minnesota band Low- is hitting the road with his pal Nate Denver. Together, they’ll be lugging guitars, amps, and boxes of fresh comics for a limited run up the West Coast, which includes a stop at our own Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery. In addition to his musical endeavors, Sally has been involved in underground comics for almost 20 years now. His stop here will coincide with the release of issue #2 of his own Sammy the Mouse. Like Tony Millionaire, Sally’s drawing is equally shaky and assured. It always appears a little rugged, but maintains a highly stylistic look overall. And the same goes for his music. The one track I’ve heard online, “My Secret World,” sounded meticulously haphazard, with a Casio-esque samba beat in the background and dueling guitars scratching out staccato chords. It all works hard to sound just slightly out of unison and completely frustrated with itself. His vocals- heavy on mid-’80s moodiness- are syrupy enough to make it all come together like a little minor-key pop gem that got mistakenly left off the Left of the Dial compilation.
