Built to Spill

Thursday, October 4

There aren’t a whole lot of bands who can fill the Showbox to capacity three nights in a row. Those that can generally opt for one night in a bigger room. As original indie rock elders, Built to Spill are definitely an act of that caliber, and whether this club show triple header is intentional, or due to a lack of booking availability at a larger venue, the end result is a win on all fronts. Being able to see the always unassuming Doug Martsch and Co. deliver classics like “Car” and “Big Dipper” in a rock club that’s still somewhat sticky floored and rough around the edges instead of a cavernous characterless void just feels right. While certain BTS peers have followed a trajectory that inevitably rubs clean some of the early magic, there’s something comforting about a band who’ve remained largely unaffected over the years. Like that secret forgotten spot that somehow stays green as concrete and glass rise all around it. With Camper Van Beethoven, the Delusions.
