When conceptualizing my fantasy Seattle-celebrity dinner, two seats at the table are variables, but three people are always invited: sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson (and Nancy’s husband, Cameron Crowe). 1976’s Dreamboat Annie or 1985’s self-titled album (“Not a new direction, but frankly, a new band,” wrote one reviewer)—they’re both solid to me. Ann’s piercing vocals are so uniquely chilling, heaven forbid a producer should try to make her sound like Madonna, as that same reviewer wrote happened in the ’80s. This September she’s releasing her first solo effort, Hope & Glory, where she most definitely sounds like herself. It’ll include renditions of songs like Lucinda Williams’ “Jackson” and Neil Young’s “War of Man,” with guests from Elton John to Rufus Wainwright.
