Watch out, wild animals. When you’re digging through the trash and munching down on crusty Doritos and scraps of donuts, avoid Evergreen Produce sprouts.Evergreen, a company that distributes sprouts in Washington state, is refusing to recall their alfalfa and spicy sprouts, even though they have been linked to 20 cases of salmonella poisoning. The sprouts remain on shelves across the state. The Food and Drug Administration is warning people to “discard them in a sealed container so people and animals, including wild animals, cannot eat them.”The Food and Drug Administration has asked the company to issue a voluntary recall, which it has so far refused. Nadine Scharf, a company co-owner, said the FDA inspected their plant and doesn’t have enough evidence to link the cases to Evergreen sprouts.”Recalling the sprouts that are out there would be like saying I am guilty of having bacterially contaminated sprouts, and as of today they haven’t documented the fact that any of our sprouts have bacteria in them,” she said.Really, lady? You may not have to recall your sprouts…yet. But you’re stirring up a PR disaster.
