KING-5 news is up with a breathless account of a playground slide in Magnolia’s Ella Bailey Park, which seems to be a magnet for young kids breaking their legs. The story centers on one Katya Adams, who says she rode down the twisty slide with her 18-month-old son Ilya on her lap, and on the way down, the kid caught his leg and broke it. And while the story calls into question the design of the slide and its history of leg-breakings (three, so far), what seems more the case is that parents just shouldn’t ride on twisty slides with their kids. The internet is awash in articles about why parents should resist the urge to put junior in their lap and go sliding. The issue is simple physics. Big mom goes down twisty slide with little kid, little leg gets caught–and snap. The KING-5 story addresses this fact with a quote from a local doctor, buried near the bottom, who says as much. But the implication is that the warning sticker on the equipment should be more explicit. So here’s our own warning sticker: if a playground slide looks like something out of a water park, don’t ride it with your kid.
